Hidden Brook Recommended Purchase Earns Spot on KY Derby Trail

Skywire opened his career with 3/4-length score in a six-panel Maiden Special contes on the Woodbine synthetic December 9 for previous trainer Sid Attard. Gary Barber bought into the colt following that effort on advice from Hidden Brook Farm and he was transferred to Mark Casse.

Trying two turns for the first time in February 13 Allowance over a sloppy Gulfstream Park main track, the 3-1 shot was off a step slow, but quickly got going and moved into a ground-saving fourth, sitting close to opening splits of :23.57 and :47.64. Ranging up two wide outside of the dueling leaders on the backstretch, the chestnut took control rounding the bend and splashed clear in the lane for a six-length success.

Skywire is one of 360 early nominees to the Triple Crown series. His perfect record and gaudy victory on dirt most likely earned him a spot in one of the upcoming Kentucky Derby prep races.

The colt certainly has the pedigree to be a factor in the Triple Crown. Skywire is a son of 2005 Preakness/Belmont Stakes hero Afleet Alex and hails from the family of Canadian champions Sky Classic, Regal Classic, Grey Classic, Classy 'N Smart, Dance Smartly and Dancethrudawn.
